How Does Ultrasound Cavitation Work?
Ultrasonic extraction occurs when high-power, low-frequency ultrasound waves are introduced into a slurry of botanical material in a solvent. Using a probe-type ultrasonic processor, these powerful waves create alternating high- and low-pressure cycles within the liquid, leading to acoustic cavitation. This phenomenon produces localized, extreme conditions-intense temperatures, pressures, rapid heating and cooling, differential pressures, and high shear forces in the medium. When cavitation bubbles collapse on solid surfaces, such as plant particles or cell walls, micro-jets and particle collisions cause effects like surface peeling, erosion, particle disintegration, sonoporation (the perforation of cell walls), and overall cell disruption. Additionally, cavitation bubble implosions create macro-turbulence and micro-mixing within the liquid.
