The ultrasonic transducer consists of a central piezoelectric ceramic element, front and rear metal cover plates, prestressed screws, electrode sheets and insulating tubes. This kind of sandwich transducer (also known as: bolt-fastened transducer) generates stable ultrasonic waves when the load changes, and is the most basic and main method to obtain a power ultrasonic drive source.

According to different designs, the shape of the ultrasonic transducer mainly includes column type (the diameter of front and rear metal cover plates are the same), horn type (the diameter of the front cover plate is excessively reduced by the arc type), and the column type has a section in the middle.

Piezoelectric ceramics are usually classified as "soft" or "hard".
Hard piezoelectric ceramics are used in power supply applications.
There are two basic types of rigid piezoelectric ceramics, commonly referred to as PZT4 and PZT8.
(PZT stands for lead zirconate titanate, which forms piezoelectric ceramics.)
PZT-8 piezoelectric ceramics have higher quality factor QM, higher safety operating temperature (Curie temperature) and lower dielectric loss (Tangδ).

Production Core Step

Because piezoceramics are weak in tension, a static compressive prestress must be applied to prevent the piezoceramics from experiencing tensile stresses when the transducer vibrates ultrasonically. The prestress also assures that the piezoceramic interfaces make good contact so that the acoustic waves are transmitted well with minimum loss. The compressive prestress must be sufficient to prevent the piezoceramics from ever experiencing any ultrasonic tensile stress and prevent any lateral piezoceramic slippage. In the manufacturing process of ultrasonic transducers, the size of prestressing plays a decisive role in quality.
The piezoelectric ceramic impedance and frequency will stabilize with the prestress's increase. A larger prestress can reduce the impedance of the transducer. If the piezoelectric ceramic is not sufficiently clamped, the transducer impedance will become larger. But not the largest is the best.
