Ultrasonic Extraction Working Principle:
Ultrasonic extraction is the preferred technique to isolate bioactive compounds from botanicals. Sonication achieves a complete extraction and thereby superior extract yields are obtained in a very short extraction time. Being such an efficient extraction method, ultrasonic extraction is cost- and time-saving, whilst resulting in high-quality extracts, which are used for food, supplements and pharmaceuticals.

How Does Ultrasound Cavitation Work?
Ultrasonic extraction occurs when high-power, low-frequency ultrasound waves are introduced into a slurry of botanical material in a solvent. Using a probe-type ultrasonic processor, these powerful waves create alternating high- and low-pressure cycles within the liquid, leading to acoustic cavitation. This phenomenon produces localized, extreme conditions-intense temperatures, pressures, rapid heating and cooling, differential pressures, and high shear forces in the medium. When cavitation bubbles collapse on solid surfaces, such as plant particles or cell walls, micro-jets and particle collisions cause effects like surface peeling, erosion, particle disintegration, sonoporation (the perforation of cell walls), and overall cell disruption. Additionally, cavitation bubble implosions create macro-turbulence and micro-mixing within the liquid. Ultrasonic irradiation effectively enhances mass transfer processes due to cavitation-related mechanisms, such as microscale liquid movement, compression and decompression within the material, and cell wall disruption, along with rapid heating and cooling.
