Ultrasonic sonicators consist of two main parts: an ultrasonic generator and a vibration system (including the transducer, booster, and probe), connected by a specialized cable. Emulsions are mixtures of immiscible liquids. High-intensity ultrasound provides the energy to break down one liquid phase into tiny droplets within another phase. The collapse of cavitation bubbles creates shock waves, generating high-velocity liquid jets that reduce droplet sizes to under 1 micron, forming micro-emulsions.
Ultrasound causes acoustic cavitation, where imploding bubbles create extreme conditions-shock waves, microjets, high temperatures (~5,000 K), and pressures (~1,000 atm)-leading to efficient mixing and the formation of nanoemulsions with tiny droplets and large surface areas.
